A huge thank you to local fell running legend Joss Naylor (MBE) for presenting the prizes at Ennerdale.
Ennerdale is a a remote valley on the western fringes of the Lake District National Park. A truly spectacular location for trail running with a fantastic combination of trails in a unique natural environment. It is an enclosed valley surrounded by some of the Lake Districts most iconic mountains; Great Gable, Pillar and Haystacks, providing a natural backdrop of dramatic ridges and wooded slopes.
Venue: Ennerdale Scout Centre, Ennerdale Bridge, Cumbria, CA23 3AR (GR NY 087 155).
Registration: Between 0800 - 1000 on the day. Numbers will be issued at registration
Start Times: 50k - 1000; 25k - 1015; 10k - 1030
Terrain: All routes are undulating and low level encompassing a great mixture of technical singletrack, forest roads and lakeshore trails. The path surface along the south side of Ennerdale Water is very rough underfoot and rocky, with a short exposed scramble around Anglers Crag. Trail shoes are strongly recommended.
Heading back down the valley
10km route: A spectacular low level lakeshore route around Ennerdale Water. The trail offers stunning views looking into the wild valley across to the iconic fells of Great Gable, Pillar and Steeple. The first section of the course is on well surfaced gravel trails and forest roads along the lakeshore, set beneath the crags of Bowness Knott. The route returns along the southern shores of Ennerdale. This section is rough underfoot and very rocky, with a short exposed scramble around Anglers Crag, but the views are spectacular.
25Km route: An extended circuit of the 10Km route around Ennerdale Water venturing further into the remote valley. The route follows the main forest road, climbing steadily to the head of the valley to reach the iconic Black Sail youth hostel. This is the high point of the route at nearly 900' and in a truly spectacular location nestled beneath Haystacks, Great Gable and Kirk Fell.
The route crosses the river Liza, returning along the forest trails set beneath the stunning backdrop of Pillar Rock. After crossing Silver Cove beck, the route rejoins the 10k course along the southern shore of Ennerdale Water. This is a very rocky section and includes a short exposed scramble around Anglers Crag, before the final section along the lakeshore trail.
50k Ultra Route: This will be two circuits of the 25k route, an ideal long distance course all contained within the Ennerdale valley. There is a total ascent of 920' per circuit, predominantely along forest roads with a rocky section along the southern shore of Ennerdale Water.
Hydration/Feed Station: For the 50 & 25k routes there will be a hydration station located at the legendary Black Sail YHA at the head of the valley (see map). Also at the end of the first 25k circuit for the 50k. These will be supplying tray bakes, bananas, peanuts, jellies, 9 Bar, coke & water.
