A Fantastic Winter Trail Race in the Heart of Kielder Forest
Latest Update: Regretfully we will not be organising this event anymore. Forestry England have increased their charges significantly, making this event unsustainable to organise. We apologise for any disappointment.
The Kielder 10 mile trail run is open to all abilities of runners. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to trail running this varied course offers something for everyone. Incorporating a great blend of terrain. You will be tackling some of the amazing trails that Kielder Forest has to offer, from the secluded Archer Cleugh Burn to the more popular Lakeside Way multi user trail.
New for 2023: Due to the extensive storm damage from last winter there are still several trails in need of repair at Kielder. This gave the opportunity to plan for some exciting improvements to the event. For 2023 we have made some modifications to the previous route & feel this will be a more enjoyable course overall.
This is still the same figure of eight format, with the course returning through the castle grounds after the initial loop. The main difference being the second section which does not involve the long ascent up through the forest to Castle Hill.

Ruth Stokes My first winter trail with my daughter (Christmas present from her). We may have come last but the organisation and marshals were great. Hope we can do this again as it was a brutal but stunning race x

“Thank you for holding the Kielder 10miler this morning. Really enjoyed it even though the stunning course was brutal. Hope to be back next year" Gillian Allen
To all involved in this weekend’s events...Thanks for a great day out! Challenging but enjoyable courses, really well marked on great trails. Superb marshals and thanks to all for waiting for me to finish. I was last finisher in both 10miles and 10km Thanks again Helen
Course: For 2023 we have a great new route planned. Starting and finishing at Kielder castle, this is still the same figure of eight format, with the course returning through the castle grounds after the initial loop.
The initial loop is slightly longer than previous editions. Starting in front of Kielder Castle & heading out along the Forest Drive, climbing steadily on forest tracks below Ravenshill Moor. This is the high point of the whole course, offering superb views across the whole valley & Deadwater Fell. A great descent leads into the secluded Archer Cleugh area, then from here return back to Kielder Castle (10k).

Cross through the finish area in the castle grounds & head out onto the second section of the course. This follows through Viaduct Wood alongside the river North Tyne, leading onto a loop which initially crosses underneath then across the historical Kielder Viaduct. Enjoy the spectacular views across Bakethin Nature reserve as you cross the viaduct (10km point) & follow the course of the old railway line. Join onto the Lakeside way multi-user trail .

Join onto the Lakeside way multi-user trail, returning back to Kielder Castle to a well deserved finish.

The course will be fully marked so all you need to do is follow the route & enjoy the scenery. This is a great event to bring along family & friends for spectating. With the route returning back through the finish area at the half way point there's plenty of opportunity to offer encouragement.

Required Kit: We've experienced some fantastic winter conditions at Kielder at previous events. The weather can change quickly or vary, with conditions in the valley very different from high up in the forest. To ensure you're prepared for the conditions that can be encountered at this time of year, all participants must dress appropriately for the conditions with suitable clothing & footwear.
