Course: Starting and finishing at Kielder castle, the initial loop heads out along a fast forest trail before picking up a single track section towards Ravenshill. The trail climbs gradually with superb views across the whole valley. A fast runable descent leads to the secluded Archer Cleugh burn, then from here return back to Kielder Castle which is just over half way on the course at this point.

You will cross through the finish area in the castle grounds & head out onto the second section of the course. This follows through Viaduct Wood alongside the river North Tyne, leading onto a loop which initially crosses underneath then across the historical Kielder Viaduct. Enjoy the spectacular views across Bakethin Nature reserve as you cross the viaduct (10km point) & follow the course of the old railway line. This leads onto a section of the Lakeside way multi-user trail to reach Bakethin Weir.

The route now follows the forest road leading up a steady climb past Devil's Lapful to reach the junction at Castle Hill This is followed by an exhilarating single track descent to reach ‘The Duchess Trail’ running alongside Kielder Burn. Cross the old pack horse bridge returning back to Kielder Castle to a well deserved finish.

Ascent: 323m     Descent: 337m

We've experienced some fantastic winter conditions at Kielder at previous events. The weather can change quickly or vary, with conditions in the valley very different from high up in the forest. To ensure you're prepared for the conditions that can be encountered at this time of year, all participants must dress appropriately for the conditions with suitable clothing & footwear. Recommended Equipment List HERE.

The course will be fully marked so all you need to do is follow the route, enjoy the scenery & look out for the forest animals. This is a great event to bring along family & friends for spectating. With the route returning back through the finish area at the half way point there's plenty of opportunity to offer encouragement. There's also a whole range of activities on offer at Kielder Castle visitor centre. If it's somewhere warm & dry you prefer to wait then...

Kielder Castle cafe will now be open, providing hot food & drinks both before & after the event. Warm up, refuel & enjoy the open log fire in this cosy family run cafe...
