The first section of the course is on well surfaced gravel trails and forest roads along the lakeshore, set beneath the crags of Bowness Knott. The route returns along the southern shores of Ennerdale. This section is rough underfoot and very rocky, with a short exposed scramble around Anglers Crag, but the views are spectacular.

The route follows the main forest road, climbing steadily to the head of the valley to reach the iconic Black Sail youth hostel. This is the high point of the route at nearly 900' and in a truly spectacular location nestled beneath Haystacks, Great Gable and Kirk Fell.
The route crosses the river Liza, returning along the forest trails set beneath the stunning backdrop of Pillar Rock. After crossing Silver Cove beck, the route rejoins the 10k course along the southern shore of Ennerdale Water. This is a very rocky section and includes ashort exposed scramble around Anglers Crag, before the final section along the lakeshore trail.
For the 25k there is a total ascent of 920' per circuit, predominantely along forest roads with a rocky section along the southern shore of Ennerdale Water.

2017 Results (Amended Courses):
"First time my husband and I have run the Ennerdale trail. We did the 10k,loved it, the scenery was Amazing!!! Fantastic event, really friendly and well organised" Janet Finn
"I ran the 50km Trail Ultra in 2014, my first ever ultra marathon. The two laps around Ennderdale water comprise of a fire road, single track and a technical section of wet routes for a good half mile plus towards the end of each lap. The height gain is minimal and the navigation is easy. I found this was a great introduction to the sport, as it allowed runners to concentrate on running rather than nav. The views at either end of Ennerdale are stunning"
"The volunteers and spectators were all very friendly and the remote location gave the race a grand feel. I thoroughly recommend the event for anyone who wants their first ultra experience in the hills" jimmymacke
"Great ultra course, ideal for novices as you're running round a lake, so no need for tricky navigation. The two 25k laps mean you're never far from safety, plus there are stunning views and a varied course that's always runnable" MarkR
"This was a beautiful, well organised event, perfect for my first time trail race. I did the 10k option and the laid back chat at the start calmed any nerves I might have had. The other runners were all so friendly, even lending me an arm to hold on to down the short scramble. The last three kilometres were very tough, but again I got so much encouragement from fellow runners. The marshals were also very encouraging. Would definitely do it again, maybe train hard and try the 25k" Catliz
"Love this event, ran it for the last 2 years" CatSlater
"This was my first ultra back in 2012 selecting the 50k option. The route entails two loops of the Ennerdale water and beyond. The course was also fully marked so no need for nav skills. The event centre was great and had the requisite shower facilities needed after such a muddy excursion. The first 7-8 miles had runners ascend up into the valley along a pleasantly runnable and gently undulating trail, before looping around the far side of Ennerdale Water. This back end of the Water has amazing technical rocky terrain, really giving a great trail running experience.
The organisers were incredibly friendly and accommodating to peoples needs throughout the day. I would highly recommend this for all trail runners. To summarise; stunning scenery and a well organised race on a cracking little route" Kirk
"Brilliant, well organised event. the run back along the side of the lake is something to behold, if you get a chance to look up!!! Would recommend to beginners and the more experienced alike"
