A late winter off road cycle sportive set amidst the vast expanse of Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland.

The Kielder Cross is an off road cycling challenge based in the remote but beautiful expanse of Kielder Forest Park. Held over two days, this unique sportive style event will consist of a 40km night ride around the Lakeside Way on the Saturday evening. This is then followed by a more challenging 60km circuit on the Sunday incorporating a wider variety of terrain.

The courses are suitable for both cyclo cross & mountain bikes. These will be fully marked so no navigation experience is necessary.

Date: Saturday 18th  & 19th Sunday  February 2017

Distance: Saturday Night Ride 40km & Sunday 60km

Start Time: From 1800 -1830 & 0930-1030 (TBC)

Venue: Hawkhirst Activity Centre, Kielder, Northumberland, NE48 1QZ.

Set within the stunning landscape of Kielder Forest, on the shores of Kielder Water and surrounded by coniferous forest, this will be an amazing experience.

Stage 1: 40km Dark Skies Ride

40km Dark Sky Course: Surrounded by the vast expanse of Britain's largest forest, this is a unique off road route encompassing the whole of Kielder Water under the dark skies of Kielder. The route incorporates the Lakeside Way, which is a multi-user trail that encircles the full 27 mile shoreline of Kielder Water.


Terrain: The Lakeside Way has a good surface and is excellent for cycling. Although non technical, this is an undulating route with 1,480' of ascent.

Stage 2: 60km Endurance Challenge

60km Course: This will be one 60km loop encircling Kielder Water and includes very few stretches on tarmacked roads. With such an extensive network of tracks we have added 'a few extras' including forest tracks, grassy trails, woodland singletrack, forest rides, open moorland, purpose built mtb trails (blue graded) & sections of the Lakeside Way. Add to this a few little unique features & this will be an incredible route.


Ascent: 3,800'/1161m.

60km Course Highlights: Utilising the amazing network of natural & purpose built mtb trails we've picked out the best sections to create this amazing route. Highlights include the secluded Lewisburn valley, sections of the Osprey & Lonesome Pine mtb routes, Kielder Viaduct, Bakethin Nature reserve, Black Belling fell, Kielder Dam
& the Lakeside Way multi user trail.
